Eureka, Calif. – A Humboldt County Superior Court judge is allowing a cruelty lawsuit to proceed against well-known dairy operation Alexandre Family Farm, which supplies Whole Foods and other large grocers.
The suit, brought by California society for the prevention of cruelty to animals (SPCA) Legal Impact for Chickens, alleges that Alexandre workers pour table salt into cows’ eyes, drag disabled cows across concrete, and starve cattle. California cruelty laws mandate that farmed animals be provided with adequate food and proper husbandry.
The lawsuit followed an April 2024 exposé revealing “systemic deception, cruelty, and animal abuse” at Alexandre Family Farm. Those findings were documented and released by animal-welfare charity Farm Forward with the help of rancher whistleblowers who came forward to bring these activities to light.
“This common-sense ruling demonstrates that the days of sweeping abuses of farmed animals under the rug are over,” says Legal Impact for Chickens President Alene Anello. “The cows held by Alexandre Family Farm deserve to have their agonizing stories told in court, and they are one giant step closer to that becoming a reality.”
Alexandre is also the subject of a separate federal class action alleging that it falsely represented Alexandre Family Farm products as “humane” despite engaging in these shocking and widespread acts of animal cruelty.
