Legal Impact for Chickens seeks a
Humane Officer.
Looking for a California-based cruelty investigator and community liaison. Want to protect farmed animals?
Applications accepted on a rolling basis.
About us:
Legal Impact for Chickens (LIC) is a 501(c)(3) litigation nonprofit and a California society for the prevention of cruelty to animals (SPCA). We work to protect farmed animals.
You may have seen our Costco shareholder derivative suit in The Washington Post, Fox Business, or CNN Business—or even on TikTok.
Now, we’re looking for our next hire—a California humane officer to help fight cruelty!
About you:
• Law enforcement experience
• Passion for helping farmed animals
• Maturity and good judgment
• Ability to work well under pressure
• Valid California Driver’s License
• Effective oral and written communication, in English at a minimum. (Additional languages are a plus.)
• Knowledge of investigative procedures and processes; laws of arrest, search, and seizure; and citizens’ Constitutional rights
• Knowledge of basic farmed animal care, and safe and humane animal handling
• Ability to occasionally lift, push, and/or move up to 50 pounds
• Physical ability to work with and restrain farmed animals of all sizes
• Successfully complete all training courses mandated by state law and LIC
• Obtain all necessary licenses and pass LIC fingerprint and background investigation
• Satisfactorily complete a California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) background check
• Kind to our fellow humans, and comfortable working with members of the public who may be hostile
About the role:
You will investigate violations of California laws related to the treatment of animals. You will respond to calls from citizens and fellow law enforcement agencies relating to farmed animal abuse and neglect, and educate the public on animal care. You’ll prepare and maintain reports, cases, and complaints, and appear in court. You will work with farmed animal owners to improve their treatment of farmed animals. And you will advise LIC’s attorneys on animal care and law enforcement issues. You will fulfill all legal requirements for a humane officer, including continuing education.
Since this is such a small organization, you’ll wear many hats. You may patrol a certain area looking for abused or neglected domestic animals. You may do factual research online or by watching video footage. You may receive and investigate a complaint from the public regarding animal cruelty. You may collect evidence and appear in court as a witness. Or you may give a public talk or write a blog post on farmed animal protection. We can only promise it won’t be dull!
Commitment: Part time. Approximately 10 hours per week.
Location and travel: This is a remote, California-based position. You must be available to travel for work as needed, since we will address cruelty all over California.
Reports to: Drew Givens, LIC’s managing attorney
Pay: $25/hour to $35/hour depending on experience
One more thing!
LIC is an equal opportunity employer. Applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, age, or veteran status.
