Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Complaint Filed against Perdue for Dropping Birds on Highway

Legal Impact for Chickens has filed a complaint with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) on behalf of a retired police officer witness. The retired officer observed and recorded what seemed to be a Perdue truck repeatedly dropping live chickens along the highway in Accomack County, Virginia. The witness’s subsequent research confirmed that poultry giant Perdue was indeed the owner of the truck.

The FMCSA complaint explains that the witness, “saw chickens strewn along the road for several miles, some alive and some dead or dying.”

The retired officer then “caught up to the truck transporting the chickens and witnessed chickens flying out of the truck and into the roadway.” The witness flagged down the driver and got the driver to stop. The truck driver stated that he was aware of the chickens coming out of the truck. But it appeared to the good samaritan that the driver had let these chickens fall out for miles, and wouldn’t have stopped if the witness hadn’t flagged him down.

The witness then contacted Perdue directly about his animal-welfare concerns, but says he was given the runaround.

Thankfully, the retired officer’s vehicle was equipped with a dashboard camera. He provided LIC with the footage he recorded. LIC is so grateful to him for his vigilance, and for standing up for animals. We hope that the FMCSA will take action against Perdue for transporting animals in this unkind and unsafe manner.

If you ever see animals being mistreated, please do what this good samaritan did, and speak up.
